This week, we identified some of the elements used in media, like a photo, title, label, or price.  In math, we reviewed adding and subtracting three-digit numbers by calculating total costs when purchasing different items, and the change due.  In social studies, we used maps of Ontario, to learn about how much land Indigenous people lost after European settlers arrived, and how that impacted their livelihoods.

In language, we practiced asking questions before, during, and after reading to help understand important details and think beyond the story.  We learned when to use words that sound the same, like “there”, “their” and “they’re”.  In media, we reflected on how logos are used by companies to identify their products.  In math, we practiced telling time on both analog and digital clocks.  In social studies, we learned how the Cree and Haudenosaunee Indigenous groups lived in the past.  In health, students listed legal, sometimes legal, and illegal substances.  In art, we learned how different lines can depict emotions.  We applied this idea to create a “mandala”, which is an ancient art form of symbols drawn inside a circle.

March 1, 2024

In honour of Wednesday’s “Pink Shirt Day”, we read a story called “Chrysanthemum”.  Each student was given a paper heart and during the reading of the story, we wrinkled the heart each time the characters used hurtful words, and then unfolded the heart each time a character did a positive action.  The wrinkles in the paper could never be fully removed. These wrinkled hearts reminded us of the impact of hurtful words and behaviors, and the importance of being kind to others.  Students then designed anti-bullying shirts.  In math, we described how to slide shapes or flip or turn them.  In social studies, we learned the Anishinabek is a group of First Nation communities that lived in forests near the Great Lakes until they were relocated further north when European settlers arrived.  In health, we learned about the effect that caffeine, sugar, and salt have on our body.

  • Please bring your library books for exchange or renewal on Monday, March 4.

In language we listened to stories about Viola Desmond and Jackie Robinson.  We learned whether to use “a” or “an” to describe singular items.  We also learned that media is created by media producers like advertisers, film production companies, reporters, musicians, and authors.  In math, we learned that computers are machines that follow instructions, or steps, to do a job.  Students then used blocks, or code, to create an algorithm.  Everyone made an excellent effort persevering through an online coding game.  In social studies, we discussed what life was like 200 years ago in Canada.

In media, we learned media is always someone’s point of view.  Sometimes media is told from a certain perspective so that it appeals to a specific audience.  In math, we learned that equations must be balanced with the same value on both sides of the equal sign.  We used this information to solve for missing numbers in an equation, which is called algebra.  Students also enjoyed implementing their knowledge of fractions by using the different colours of Smarties to describe parts of a group.  In social studies, we learned about the different responsibilities of the federal, provincial, and municipal governments.  In health, students designed a poster promoting oral health.  In art, we used our math fraction knowledge to cut paper circles in equal pieces and created an underwater picture.

  • Report cards were sent home today.
  • No school on Monday, February 19.
  • Grilled Cheese Day on Friday, February 23.

February 9, 2024

In language, we read and compared biographies about Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks.  In math, we learned to use fractions to describe parts of a group, as well as parts of a whole.  We followed a procedure to create a penguin from different coloured circles that were cut into various fractions.  In social studies, students designed jerseys to reflect an Ontario region of their choice.  In health, we listed different processed and unprocessed foods.

In language, we learned the suffix “ed” turns vowels into the past and has three different sounds.  Students used a Chromebook to write a paragraph about a country they would like to visit. They also made a great effort trying to use examples from the text when answering a question.  In math, we discovered that division means equal sharing.  We used different tools to answer division questions, such as number lines and drawing pictures.  In social studies, we created a line graph showing how forests have increased in York Region over the past century.  In health, we considered the benefits and disadvantages of processed and unprocessed foods.

In language this week, we made predictions by using clues from the book to help guess what will happen next.  Students did an excellent effort writing a paragraph justifying their opinion about a topic of their choice.  In math, we reviewed multiplication with various activities and games.  In social studies, we reviewed the natural resources found in Ontario and learned about the impact mining has on people and the environment.  In art, we connected our math understanding by drawing a city landscape with different “array” window patterns.

January 19, 2024

In language, we listened to biographies about Martin Luther King Jr.  Students wrote a paragraph about their favourite school subject.  We also used conjunctions to connect sentences using words like “so/and/because/or/but” to create compound sentences.  In math, we learned that multiplication is the process of repeatedly adding equal groups.  We used the strategy of organizing these groups in equal rows, called arrays.  In social studies, we discussed the importance of conservation, or protecting nature, including the forestry industry in the Canadian Shield.  In art, we learned about a style of painting called pointillism, which uses only dots of colour to create an image.  We used this idea to create a map of Ontario.  On Wednesday, artists from the MacLaren Art Centre taught us about printmaking.
